Jonathan Chatfield - Campaigning for South East Cambridgeshire
|
There are only a few months to go until a General Election.
Gordon Brown and the Labour Government show little sign of gaining the confidence of the British people. Voters continue to be disappointed by the complete lack of fresh ideas. The Labour vote here in South East Cambs is now down to between 5% and 7% in recent elections.
Nationally, the economy shows few signs of recovery. The number of young people not in employment, education or training is approaching one million. And the lack of clearly defined and achievable objectives for our mission in Afghanistan has depressing consequences. We see these on our TV screens every night.
For the Tories there is no apparent enthusiasm for their proposed programme - the only endorsement being 'they are not Labour'. Where exactly do they stand on action to combat climate change, democratic reform at Westminster or Europe?
It remains for the Liberal Democrats to chart a positive and progressive way forward on the issues facing us, nationally and internationally. With clear leadership from Nick Clegg, Vince Cable and team, we have been speaking out on the expenses scandal, a green road to economic recovery and Afghanistan.
As the main challengers to the Conservatives here in South East Cambs, our local team are out on the door-step every weekend and several weekday evenings to meet local people, hear your views and campaign on the issues that matter to you.

"I hate to say it, but only one party leader seems to have grasped that, if you construct a system where unskilled people are worse off by taking a job than by staying on welfare, they remain trapped in poverty - and that is Nick Clegg. "
Lord Norman Tebbit
Daily Telegraph online - 13 Jan
"It's unbelievable that the Tories are still planning to cut taxes for a handful of millionaires when the majority of people across the country are feeling the squeeze. We need fair tax cuts that put money back in the pockets of ordinary people. The Tory sums simply do not stack up. It is irresponsible and highly misleading for George Osborne to continue to pretend that they do. "
Vince Cable MP
Responding to Conservative Spending Plans - 4 Jan
